After a quick scan of the half-empty lot he walked briskly to the motel office, keeping the gun tucked snug against the right rear pocket of his jeans.
Through the office window he saw the weighty clerk leaning on the counter reading a magazine. Overhead bells jangled as Andrew opened the door. He stepped inside and did a quick inventory of his surroundings. The walls were bare, the furnishings sparse, the air hot and stale.
The clerk laid down the magazine, his ample forehead slick with sweat. “You need a room?”
Not likely. Andrew whipped the gun out from behind his back and jabbed the barrel into the man’s cheek.
The guy’s eyes bulged with fear. “Hey mister. I don’t want no trouble. The money’s in the register. Take it, okay?”
Thanks, but no thanks. Andrew waved the gun. “Go on. Get in the back.”
“Whatcha going to do? Please don’t kill me.” The clerk turned and shuffled down a hallway where the motel jutted a ninety-degree turn to the right. At the end, Andrew eyed the mid-sized storage room filled with supplies.
Perfect. Even has a dead bolt on the outside of the door.
He shoved the gun into the clerk’s back. “Now go on. Get in there. If you make any noise, I’ll blow your fucking head off. Understand?”
The guy nodded and walked into the room. Andrew stepped back, closed the door three-quarters of the way and positioned the semi-automatic at the back of man’s head.
No witnesses. Ever.
He squeezed the trigger.
A fine mist of blood sprayed from the exit wound. The clerk dropped forward like a toppled tree to the linoleum floor. As blood pooled around his large head, a stream of red inched toward a mop and bucket in the corner. Without a second thought, Andrew shut the door and secured the lock. Before leaving the office, he located the duplicate room keys hanging inside a metal cupboard, and snatched the one he wanted.
Outside, nothing moved except a light breeze. Giddy with excitement he sauntered along the motel’s façade, ducking between the windows until he stood in front of room number seven.
He gritted his teeth at the mere thought of her. How she had ruined a good man’s life.
Your time’s up, bitch.
With the gun clutched in one
hand, Andrew eased the key into the lock.
